I’m the reason Ole Miss Soccer won Sunday night in Memphis.
With this job comes certain traits. I guess one of them is superstition. I’ve never really considered myself to be superstitious, but since taking this job, I find myself doing more and more things that people might consider peculiar.
It all started in May of 2012. Every time I would drive into town from Kentucky, I would kiss the columns of Vaught-Hemingway. I told myself that I would do that until Ole Miss hired me. They did 3 months later.
I was so nervous during my first football game vs UCA that I walked the field and touched each of the pylons in the end zones. It settled me, and I’ve done it every game since, including last Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. The only thing that’s different now is that I say my daughter’s name every time I touch a pylon.
This past Sunday, our soccer team was down 1-0 going into the half. Feeling like I needed to do something different, I switched by team bracelets from my left wrist to my right. We scored two goals and one in overtime.
So there you have it. It’s nice being the MVP of Sunday’s match. Well, maybe CeCe Kizer deserves that honor, but I’m sure I was a close second.
